My Easy Green Smoothie

I'm sure you've heard about the green smoothie craze, if not here it goes!  I LOVE having at least 1 green smoothie every day.  It fills me up and I can get all the nutrients I need to get me through the day.  I also love smoothies because they can be a vessel for all those amazing super foods, like spirulina (which i add to every smoothie.) *More about Spirulina in another post :) Smoothies are amazing for our digestive system because all the fiber keeps things moving nicely, if you know what I mean.  If you start having a green smoothie a day as a meal replacement for 30 days, you will start shedding excess pounds and your digestion will be amazing.  Give it a shot and let me know how you feel!!I know for some of us we think gross there's no way a green smoothie can taste good.  When I first started making smoothies I thought the same thing.  Believe me, some of my first attempts at green smoothies came out more like something that looked like thick mud..YUCK!!!

As I kept experimenting I learned more about what flavor combinations worked well together, and as my taste buds changed I started enjoying them more. You'll notice once you start having lots of smoothies you'll enjoy eclectic combinations and won't need as much sweet fruit to mask the flavor of the veggies.

So here is a recipe for my go to green smoothie that tastes good every time;

1 cup of dairy free milk (preferably almond or hemp)1 banana1 large handful of your greens of choice1 orange or grapefruit (whichever you prefer)1 apple1 teaspoon spirulina or other powdered greens1/2 cup frozen pineapple

The key here is the frozen pineapple.  I have found that the pineapple can mask the flavor of any greens.  You can use any frozen fruit, I just love the flavor of the pineapple. Plus it's great for inflammation :)

Put everything in the blender and blend until smooth. A high-speed blender like a Vitamix works best for breaking down greens, but is not necessary.  If you are using a regular blender my advice would be to add the dairy free milk and greens first.  Blend that together until smooth and then add everything else in, blend and enjoy!

A quick note on making your smoothies dairy free.  I know that lots of people like adding yogurt or regular milk into their smoothies...

In my opinion I think this is counterproductive with what we are trying to do when drinking smoothies.  I believe that dairy causes unwanted inflammation and mucus in our bodies and is hard on our digestive system.

A banana creates the same creaminess as yogurt does and adds potassium, the hemp or almond milk gives the same effect as regular milk but without all the additives that can cause inflammation.   But hey, this is just my opinion...it's totally up to you what you decide to do ;)

Hope you enjoy the smoothie!!  If you're in our area, come on by the juice bar and I'll make it for you..with all the best ingredients and a whole lota love!!

Happy Blending!!

Becca
